David Archuleta vs. David Cook finale in the seventh installment of the highest rating reality show in America is something really to watch out for. But before the two Davids collide with each other let’s look back to their season.
The fact that the contestants were good does not change another truth that they or their performances are not memorable enough to be made for mediocre television, watchers say. Where was the drama, the unpredictability, the oddball personalities? In short, where was the fun?
Such criticism is ironic given the heat “Idol” took last year when Sanjaya Malakar, more a hairstyle than a singer, held the spotlight. Or the reaction when dancin’ man Taylor Hicks won the title in 2006, trading as much on charm as skill.
Producers of the Fox show made an effort this year to go for vocal gold over glitz, and this is the thanks they get — along with remaining the No. 1 show, albeit with slimmer ratings. But the show is losing its touch to its audience. If it weren’t for Ramiele Malubay, I think we Filipinos would not have watched Idol in the first place.
The viewers missed the human drama reality shows are supposed to supply them more. Syesha Mercado’s family background is a bit of that only it was only spotlighted when she reached the top three spot. After this season, the next one should be back with what its audience been deprived of and that’s not just talking about talent.
